Most law firms still treat legal intake as a nine-to-five function. Their clients don’t.
People rarely stop thinking about legal problems when the office closes. They call when they get home from work, when the kids are asleep, or on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
But, in your office, your legal intake only works from nine to five, attorneys disconnect after work, and weekends are treated as downtime.
Your clients don’t live on that schedule.
The firms that understand this make themselves available when clients are actually ready to reach out.
What the data says about after-hours legal intake
In 2022, legal marketing agency MMM analyzed more than 30,000 calls placed to U.S. law firms over six months using CallRail’s call-tracking platform.
The objective was to understand when prospective legal clients contact law firms and how those calls differ from regular business-hour inquiries.
97% of calls happened outside the traditional 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule.
During weekdays, almost 63% of after-hours calls occurred between 8:00–9:00 a.m. and 5:00–6:00 p.m.
One finding stood out immediately. Nearly 60% of weekend calls came from first-time legal calls: Not existing clients, referral partners, or vendors.
These were people looking for legal help for the first time: exactly the conversations every law firm wants to generate.
And they’re being lost in a ringing phone.
The double cost of an unanswered call
Every new matter starts long before the phone rings.
Someone searched Google. Read your reviews. Visited your website. Compared several firms. Decided yours looked trustworthy enough to call.
The phone call is simply the final step.
Every unanswered call wastes the work that happened before it.
Whether the caller found you through Google, a referral, your website, or years of branding, you already invested time, money, or trust to make that phone ring.
When nobody answers, that investment disappears in seconds.
The firm that answers is the firm they hire.
When someone calls three law firms, they rarely remember every attorney they spoke with.
They remember who answered, who listened, and who made the next step easy.
According to the Lead Response Management Study by Dr. James Oldroyd and his research team, responding to a new inquiry within 5 minutes dramatically increases the chances of making contact compared with waiting 30 minutes.
That’s logical, isn’t it? How many other attorneys can they contact in 25 minutes?
In legal services, where urgency and trust drive decision-making, responsiveness isn’t just good customer service. It’s a competitive advantage.
But being available no longer means sitting behind a desk all day.
It means building an after-hours legal intake system that ensure opportunities don’t disappear simply because they arrived outside office hours.
Growth doesn't stop at 5:00 PM
Most firms invest heavily in generating demand.
Far fewer invest in capturing every opportunity that demand creates.
